About

I Built a 10-Person Content Team.
Then I Replaced It With a Stack.

15 years in digital marketing. No degree. 700+ articles published. 1.3 million words. And the realization that the machine I spent years building could now fit in a terminal window.

The Short Version

I'm Alan Martin. I spent 15 years in digital marketing (PPC, SEO, content operations, account management), working my way from retail jobs to running a $3.6MM/year book of business at a company that IPO'd while I was there. No college degree. Just stubbornness, curiosity, and an uncle who gave me a computer when I was 12.

Freedom Online exists because I watched the same disruption cycle happen twice: first in advertising, now in knowledge work. I'd rather be building the tools than getting replaced by them.

The Credentials, Fast

2010–2019

ReachLocal → Gannett/USA TODAY NETWORK

Started as a campaign consultant managing 100+ PPC campaigns for national franchise brands. Ended as Senior Strategic Account Manager running a $3.6MM/year book for Lincoln Property Company, Greystar, and Pinnacle Living. Grew the multifamily vertical from $150K/mo to $400K/mo. The company IPO'd and was acquired while I was there.

2019–2020

Alan Morgan Group

Pivoted into deep technical SEO, the kind that goes well beyond what big agencies touch. My mentor spent $100K learning it and passed it down. This is where I went from 'can talk about SEO' to 'can actually do SEO.'

2020–2023

RNKD, Head of Operations

Co-founded and ran all operations. Built a content production pipeline from zero: ~10 freelance writers across multiple time zones, a part-time editor, VAs, a content manager, Asana workflows, and a Slite knowledge base. Published 1.3M+ words and 700+ articles across multiple sites in 18 months. Flagship site: 239K → 415K organic monthly visits (+75%), revenue +101%.

2024–Present

Freedom Online + Vantage Aerial Works

Building two businesses simultaneously: FFO (the resource you're reading now) and VAW (drone services for real estate, construction, and mapping). Both run on AI-augmented systems instead of teams.

The Moment the Math Changed

At RNKD, I tested GPT-2 for content production. It was terrible. I dismissed it. Figured useful AI writing was a decade away. So I hired humans instead. Built the machine around people. That was the right call at the time.

But managing writers across time zones, editing for quality, coordinating VAs, maintaining Asana: the operational cost scaled linearly with volume. More content meant more people, which meant more management. There was no multiplier effect. The output was great. The math wasn't.

GPT-3 seemed impressive at the time. In hindsight, it was mere drivel. Late 2023, agents were promising but too much friction. The EQ wasn't there, the output was derivative slop. Then something shifted. Claude 3.7 landed. GPT-4.5 landed. Reasoning models matured. Emotional intelligence in outputs crossed a threshold that made me sit up.

Suddenly, the content quality matched what my 10-person team produced, for $20/month in API costs.

The Mech Suit Theory

AI isn't a replacement for skill. It's a force multiplier. If you rolled a zero in intelligence at character creation, a 60× multiplier still gives you zero. But if you rolled a 6, with real domain knowledge, real pattern recognition, real experience knowing what good output looks like, now you're running at 60. Or 600.

My 15 years of knowing what good looks like is the seed crystal. The AI is the mech suit around it. That's the edge, and it's the same edge available to anyone with genuine expertise in their domain.

Why Freedom Online Exists

You don't need a team. You need a stack.

The same skills that make someone a $70K employee can make them a $140K+ freelancer when multiplied by AI. The corporate world is about to shed white-collar jobs at a scale most people aren't prepared for. The question isn't whether this disruption happens. It's whether you're riding it or getting flattened by it.

Freedom Online is the resource I wish existed when I started figuring this out: practical tool stacks, honest reviews (not affiliate-driven rankings), real income mechanics, and the systems thinking that turns "I use ChatGPT sometimes" into "I run a business on an AI-augmented operating system."

This isn't a hype site. It's an operator showing his work.

The Operator's Brief

One email per week. What's actually working in AI tools, what's hype, and what I'm building in real time. No fluff, no affiliate bait, no "10 AI tools that will BLOW YOUR MIND." Just signal.
